Counselling, or motivational therapy, involves a system of record-keeping and rewards. You and your child track agreed-upon behaviour (versus a “wet” or “dry” night), such as: drinking less fluid before bed, using the bathroom before bed, or helping to change the sheets after a wet night. Positive behaviour is then rewarded with a fun sticker (perhaps of your child’s choosing) to place on a calendar. Rewards can be used alone or along with other treatments.
Remind your child that bedwetting isn’t their fault – avoid “punishment” for a wet night. Do your best to maintain a positive and supporting environment, even in the face of setbacks.
